The warming of the climate is only the latest and most serious of the destructive impacts unleashed by humanity’s harnessing of powerful technologies. For all our cleverness, humans are not so good at recognizing the cumulative problems that human action has wrought. As our species pushes against the limits of the planet, the limits of our own human nature are exposed.
Whether we can develop the collective foresight and cooperation needed to avoid disaster, remains an open question.
As part of the way forward, the enlightenment virtues of respect for factual and scientific (theoretical) truth, and the debunking of superstition and delusion, must be upheld and fought for. Beyond mere facts, we also need integrative perspectives which help us make sense of the global crisis and our place in the cosmos. And the limitations of human reason, including our evident capacity for self-delusion, need to be fully appreciated.
This blog has no pretensions to originality, but merely points to interesting material on the above topics.
